DRY WEATHER – A MAJOR THREAT TO SKIN HEALTH

As humidity drops and cold winds increase during the autumn and dry season, the skin’s natural barrier becomes more vulnerable. Many people experience dryness, flaking, redness, or itching — all signs of impaired skin barrier function. When transepidermal water loss increases and sebaceous gland activity decreases, the skin progressively loses its ability to retain moisture.

Below are the dermatologic conditions that commonly flare during dry weather:

  1. Xerosis (Dry Skin)
Xerosis occurs when skin moisture falls below 10%, resulting in roughness, scaling, and itching. The condition is particularly common on the shins and lower legs.
  2. Rosacea and Sensitive Skin
Sudden shifts from cold outdoor temperatures to warm indoor environments cause vasodilation, leading to facial flushing, burning, and increased sensitivity. Without timely management, symptoms may become persistent or worsen.
  3. Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)
Dry air is one of the strongest triggers of eczema flares. In children, lesions frequently appear on the cheeks and extremities; in adults, flare-ups often affect flexural areas and the neck. Symptoms typically include intense itching, redness, and irritation.
  4. Psoriasis
This chronic inflammatory skin condition tends to relapse during the dry season, characterized by sharply demarcated red plaques covered with silvery scales on areas such as the elbows, knees, and scalp.

If you experience persistent dryness, irritation, or worsening skin symptoms, early evaluation and treatment are essential to prevent complications and maintain optimal skin health.
