LUNG CANCER – THE LEADING CAUSE OF CANCER-RELATED MORTALITY

Lung cancer remains the most lethal form of cancer worldwide. The disease is particularly dangerous because early-stage lung cancer often presents no noticeable symptoms. As a result, more than 80 percent of patients are diagnosed only when the disease has progressed to stage III or IV.

Main causes

  • Smoking, which increases the risk of lung cancer by up to 20 times
  • Secondhand smoke, air pollution, and exposure to cooking fumes
  • Genetic predisposition or occupational exposure to toxic chemicals

Early warning signs
Common symptoms include a persistent cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), and unexplained weight loss.

Prevention and early detection

  • Smoking cessation remains the most effective preventive measure. After 15 years of quitting, the risk of lung cancer approaches that of non-smokers.
  • Adults aged 55 and older with a long-term smoking history should undergo annual low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening.
  • Maintaining a healthy diet and regular physical activity helps support optimal respiratory function.

Low-dose CT (LDCT) screening
At H PLUS, advanced LDCT technology reduces radiation dose by up to 70 percent compared with conventional CT while maintaining high-resolution imaging. This allows early detection of small pulmonary nodules and subtle abnormalities within the lungs.
Clinical guidelines recommend annual LDCT screening for adults aged 55 or older who have smoked for more than 30 years.
Studies show that LDCT detects early-stage lung cancer in up to 68.4 percent of cases, significantly improving treatment outcomes and survival rates.

Early awareness and proactive screening play a critical role in protecting long-term respiratory health.
